There is a feeling in your stomach. A pull. A desire. An ache.
You know you’re ready to do more in your life and carve out time to harness your passion, but you’re stuck.
How do you get from here to there?
What if you take steps and you don’t end up liking it?
What if you spend time and money investing in something you’ve longed dreamed of, only to have it fail?
What if people laugh at you and think you’re crazy for pursuing your dream when you’ve got a million other things on your plate?
What if, what if, what if….
Whether it’s starting you own small business to work from home; deciding to set up shop on Etsy to sell your art; travel to another country to volunteer or reduce your hours at work to allow more time with your children, there are five essential steps every woman needs to take in order to turn her idea in to reality.
No matter how grand your dream is, or isn’t (that’s for you to decide), when you connect with the feeling of needing more simmering away in the pit of your stomach, it can only be ignored for so long before it either makes you crazy or you take a leap of faith in yourself to see what happens.
When you first take steps to create a new path, pursue a dream or tick off an item on your bucket list, there will always be barriers popping up to test your resolve.
To help you navigate the path ahead and combat those obstacles, here are my 5 essential steps (plus a bonus one) every woman needs to know to achieve anything she wants:
Step 1: Decide
It sounds easy, but it may be the hardest step you’ll take.
Let’s face it, the idea brewing underneath the surface is obviously hanging around for a reason. It’s waiting for you to decide to acknowledge it, approve it and move forward with it.
But here’s the catch, it’s not easy to simply decide when have all the What If’s lined up around the block waiting to knock you down with a feather.
Only when you connect with your heart and give yourself permission to try, will you find the way to move forward and take the steps necessary to make it happen. Without this decision, you will never see the sequence of new steps waiting before you. Instead you’ll only notice the roadblocks, barriers and trenches waiting to obstruct your journey.
If you can’t get past your perceived hurdles, then you’ve essentially made a decision to do nothing. Connect with yourself and ask, how does deciding to nothing feel? Your answer lies in your feelings.
Step 2: Visualise
Woo hoo! You’ve made the decision to follow your heart and see where it’ll lead you. I’m so happy for you. Now it’s important to create a clear vision of what you desire so you can figure out the most effective steps to take to achieve it.
Marketing gurus call this ‘Reverse Engineering’ – when you know the outcome you desire and work backwards to see the plan unfold.
For example, if you’re goal is to reduce your hours at work to be at home with the kids more, identify what that looks like for you. Is it starting early in order to leave early? Is it negotiating with your boss to work from home one day a week or perhaps you decide to insert one day a week of leave over a few months instead of taking 3 weeks off in one hit?
Write down what your dream life looks like once you’ve achieved the goal, and get crystal clear on this vision. Feel in to it. Is it the outcome you genuinely desire, or have you curtailed it to please everyone else this vision impacts?
You’ve only got one life, so promise me your grand vision fills you with fist-pumping, high-fiving joy, otherwise you may have wasted a critical opportunity.
Step 3: Focus
Ok, now you have decided to make it happen and you have a vision.
The next step is to remain focused on your path and avoid comparing your self with others.
Friends, family colleagues or inspirational ladies on Instagram have all started their path at the beginning and at various stages of their life. If you feel late to the building-my-own-path-party, it doesn’t mean you’ve failed, or that you wont achieve the same level of “hell yeah” happiness they (appear to) have.
As Danielle La Porte said, ‘Comparison is a slippery slope to jealously’ and the negative energy that comes from jealousy will not empower your path forward, but hold you back in a place of anger and excuses.
This is your journey, your life, your lessons and your outcomes. Focus on your steps and have confidence that you will arrive at your destination when the time is right.
Step 4: Behave
How would you behave each day if you’d already achieved your dream?
Would you still find reasons and excuses or live with purpose and intention?
Author Elizabeth Gilbert recommends to anyone who dreams of becoming a writer to write for 10 minutes every day. It doesn’t need to make sense, it doesn’t need to be a serious piece of work or for anyone else to read, she just wants you to start writing.
In other words, if you want to be a writer you can’t wait until your first novel is published to call yourself a writer, you need to take small consistent steps each day to behave your way to success.
Similarly, I started calling myself a Coach and CEO months before I’d finished my certification of Life Coaching and established my business, because it helped me cement this path in my mind and allowed me to take intentional steps towards making it reality.
What actions will you take each day to live the life you want now?
Step 5: Believe
The more you start to put faith in your future and showing others you’re serious about building a heart-driven path, the more the naysayers will try to convince you you’re wrong, going to fail, wasting your time etc…
Obviously you’ve already had this discussion with yourself a million times, but you still decided to make it happen and see just how far you can go. Remember that decision and believe in yourself.
Those troublemakers don’t really know what you’re made of (even if they are close to you). As Eleanor Roosevelt said, “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.”
This is your dream, your life, your goal and your path. I believe in you. You believe in you. You’ve got this!
Bonus Step: Nourish
While you’re riding this surge of excitement and adrenalin, don’t forget to look after your mental, emotional, physical and mental well-being. You wont be good to anyone if you don’t nourish your mind, body and soul to maintain balance and a gorgeous outlook on life.
Only you know what it is that nourishes each element of your being (walking, writing, meditating, swimming, eating correctly etc…), so remember to look after yourself, put yourself first for a change and reignite your energy for this beautiful life.
Your path is waiting.
